Congratulations Sir B.V.Doshi -– Pritzker Awardee 2018!


The first Indian to win the award, Sir B.V.Doshi is a renowned Internationally acclaimed Architect, an Educator and a pioneer of low-cost housing and Urban planning.

Interestingly, B.V. Doshi served on the Pritzker jury from 2005 to 2009.

The Pritzker Architecture Prize, founded in 1979 by Jay A. Pritzker, is awarded annually to honour a living architect whose work has contributed immensely to humanity and the built environment.

Born in Pune in 1927, B.V.Doshi completed his architecture studies from J.J. school of arts, Mumbai and moved to Paris to work under Le Corbusier from 1951 to 1955.

He returned to India to oversee Le Corbusier’s work in Chandigarh & Ahmedabad. He was significantly involved in the design of Chandigarh. His task was to design living spaces for government servants, which eventually piqued his interest in low-cost communal spaces. Staying on in Ahmedabad, he eventually started his own practice under the name Vastu Shilpa consultants in 1956.

As an Academician, B.V.Doshi started The School of Architecture at Ahmedabad in the 1960’s, known as Centre for planning and Technology (CEPT) from 1972.

B.V. Doshi’s portfolio comprises of sustainable architectural works using locally available materials and technology, in complete harmony with the history, culture, local traditions of his native homeland.

Sir B.V.Doshi is a recipient of many honours & awards that include the Padma Shree in 1976, the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1996, Prime Minister's National Award for Excellence in Urban Planning and Design in 2000 to name a few.
