7 Vital Elements that shape an Interior Space!

“The details are not details, they make the design” said Eminent Designer Charles Eames.
What makes for a well designed and vibrant Interior?
Definitely the components and their amalgamation is what make a cohesive whole...
Today we take a brief glance at the central elements and their fundamental roles in Interior design.
The basic building blocks or shape creators are Space, Line and Form, while Colour, Pattern, Texture and Light establish the character and ambience of an environment.

·         Space
The fundamental element to any design is Space or the 3 dimensions – Floor, Ceiling and Walls. A functionally well planned and aesthetically designed space is the key to an appealing Interior.
An apt balance of Positive and Negative space in a room is an important aspect to a well designed space. A positive space includes Furniture units, furnishing, false ceiling, paintings and decor elements while a negative space incorporates circulation spaces and void areas on walls and ceiling.

·         Line
The guiding force of eye movement in any space, the element Line can be Horizontal, Vertical, Angular or Organic. A combination of this element creates forms.
A narrow room can be made to look more spacious by predominantly using horizontal lines. Angular lines can help create dynamism in a space. Organic lines add a softness to the space it inhabits.

·         Form
3 dimensional geometric objects that are used in a space and organic elements like plants are Forms. Using forms of similar nature in different objects around a room is an uncomplicated way to create a harmonious space.
Blending Organic forms in a space that has predominantly geometric forms can help soften the character of a room. A point of interest can be forged by adding a form that is different from the dominant forms in a space.

·         Colour
“As fierce as Red, As definite as Black, As placid as Blue
These phrases speak a lot about Colours. The feel of a space can be unconsciously perceived by the colours used in it. As a character creating element, it has to be used in the right amount, shade and tint for a pleasing, vibrant or placid space.

“There is nothing like a bright accent colour to enliven a room”
Colours can be used to define definite spaces in a room and create points of focus.

·         Pattern
A repetitive design in forms, colour, furnishing and decor pieces create a Pattern. Pattern as an element is used to create interest and add liveliness in a space.
Patterns in combination with Colour and texture add to the richness and vibrancy of a space.

·         Texture
An element that adds depth to a form, Texture is associated with the feel of surfaces in a space. Adding texture to one’s design involves adding elements that appeal to one’s tactile senses, namely touch and sight.
Combining glossy forms against rough hewn surfaces enhances the beauty of both surfaces while adding intensity to a space.

·         Light
Natural or Artificial, Light is a very important element that is both functional and aesthetic, as Design is defined by Light. Light as an element is essential to enhance elements like Colour, Texture and Pattern.
Harnessing maximum natural light is an essential to the physiology of users in a space. Artificial lighting is a combination of Task, Accent and Ambient lighting. A balanced combination of all types of lighting is required for a well illuminated space.

Makeover suggestion: Adding subtle patterns in different textures is one way of creating points of interest in a space that has a monochrome palette.

Wishing everyone a refreshing weekend, its Goodbye until next time....
