Faith, they say can move mountains. It plays a big role
in people’s lives and spaces dedicated to prayer, is an essential requirement,
be it in public spaces or in private residences.
How does one incorporate an intangible emotion of faith and the
traditional elements associated with it into modern day tangible spaces?
- Floor Space - Prayer spaces range from a small unit or ledge on a wall, an alcove, a small room to sizeable areas in a courtyard.
- Zoning - Depending on the community it is designed for, considering their beliefs and personal requirements, a Prayer space may be a very private area or a zone that opens into semi-public areas that can accommodate large gatherings during occasions.
- Functionality - Storage for essential paraphernalia is an important requirement. Drawers, ledges, alcoves are elements that fulfill this requisite.
- Theme - The enormous gamut of materials that are available today, have ensured various finishes and its diverse usage has helped blend traditional and religious motifs into Contemporary settings. Material trends in Prayer rooms include Glass with Acid work of traditional motifs, Corian with cut work of Spiritual writings and Filigree works in MDF Boards.
- Ambience - Elements that project peace and calm are a primary requirement of a Prayer area. Soothing colours like whites, creams and beiges help in that aspect. Materials in wood and warm white mood lighting, all add to create an ambience of serenity.
- Wall Cladding and Flooring - Surface cladding materials are preferred to paints for their easy to clean nature. Natural Stone, Glossy Vitrified Tiles, Corian, Metallic Laminates, Acrylic Sheets, Glass and even Mirrors have found their way into these spaces and Cladding materials. Natural Stones and Glossy Vitrified tiles are most commonly used materials for flooring.
- Ceiling Finishes - Paints, Gypsum panels, Veneer on Plywood, MDF Decorative panels, Acrylic and Glass are some of the materials used to compliment Prayer Room ceilings.
- Space Enhancers - CNC Cut Jaalis in metal and stone, Filigree Work in wood and Plywood, Embossing on Glass and Metal, 3D Wall Panels, Stickering with Spiritual motifs or writings are some elements that are used to enhance these spaces.
- Lighting - Appropriate Focus Lights, Strip Lights and Decorative Lighting Fixtures are functional, as well as visual enhancers of the Space.
