8 Indian Design Elements in Present Day Interiors!


A synergy of traditional Indian elements and Contemporary spaces are what we look at today. Our rich and diverse heritage offers a vast gamut of design elements that can be interpreted and used aptly in the modern context.





  • Vibrant Colours
    Colours are an integral part of Indian culture and are very symbolic. For instance, Deep orange of Marigold is associated with festivities, Yellow with sanctity and Green, the colour of nature with prosperity.
    Traditional colours used in modern living spaces can help create a point of focus in a room and also attain a certain ambience.



  • Jali
    An architectural decoration in Hindu temple architecture and Islamic architecture, Jalis are perforated stone screens, ornamented in geometric patterns that were used to reduce   temperature of a building.
    Perforated MDF sheets are a modern interpretation of a Jali. These are used as Partition screens and as decorative wall claddings.




  • Motifs in Intricate Patterns
    Traditional structures in wood were embellished with Motifs that were made up of patterns of wave like curves, tendrils, leaves, flowers, figurines and combinations of geometric figures.
    Indian motifs on Present day Wall papers, Decal wall stickers, Texture paints are inspired by age old motifs and are used to adorn and beautify vertical surfaces.


  • Solid Wood Furniture
    Immense availability of natural wood and excellent traditional craftsmanship has ensured detailed furniture pieces in solid wood.
    Select pieces of traditional furniture when used in a way that complements Contemporary elements, highly enhances a space.



  • Jhoola or Swing
    A Jhoola or Swing is associated with certain festivities and its presence indicates a Bohemian feel.
    Used in modern spaces as a functional accessory, this element adds a fun element to the space it adorns.



  • Athangudi Tiles
    Handmade tiles made over glass surfaces in vibrant colours, Athangudi tiles have adorned Chettiyar mansions in Chettinad for more than a century.This timeless element when used in Contemporary spaces is a magnificent ambience highlighter.


  • Handlooms
    India has been home to Khadi, Cottons and Silk from time immemorial.
    Curtains, Cushion covers, bedspreads and Wall hangers in these materials and in vibrant colours and traditional work like Kalamkari and Batik, brings in an Indian flavour to present-day Interiors.


  • Tribal Art
    Artwork like Gondh, Warli and Madhubani were all used to embellish age old homes in their respective native villages.
    These art forms still enhance walls of contemporary spaces when used in the right context.
