5 Super Design Tips for a Daughter’s Room –Toddler to Teen!

Mauves, Pinks, Patterns and Frills are some elements that instantly crop up in one’s mind, when contemplating doing a girl’s room. Are these indices, the only pointers that guide one during the design process? – It definitely should not. There is more to a girl’s room than what one is routinely exposed to.

A perfect symbiosis of functionality and aesthetics is what helps a space be enjoyable by its users. Designing in accordance to the child’s needs and interests, with detailing specific to her age group are of utmost importance.

Functional needs and necessities
Allocation of specific zones for the child’s different activities –study, play, hobbies, dressing and dedicated units for storage- makes for a well designed space.

·       A dedicated study table with adequate storage for books and stationery is mandatory. Space for a seat in close proximity to the study table is a welcome addition for a parent or tutor.
·       Bunk beds and Trundle beds are space savers while also being a boon when the child has a friend over for sleepovers.

·       A Wardrobe and Dresser with shelves and drawers, that can be easily accessed by the child is an important necessity.
·       Free floor space for comfortable sitting during board games, craft and project work.
·       Specific practising space for a musically inclined child and informal reading corners are added inputs in the design scheme.
·       Shelves and storage spaces for books, bags, toys, craft work, footwear and the like are very much essential.

Colours and Patterns
Colours play a very important role in any space. It influences the mood and well being of the user of the space and form the character of the space.

·       A girl’s room need not be restricted to Pinks and Purples as per current trends. One can choose from a palette of greens, blues, yellows, oranges, greys & white. The success of colour scheme is the ability to use a combination of colours in the right amount and shade.
·       Colours can represent the mood one wants to create in the room. For example, Yellow generates a buoyant and upbeat feel to a space and Sea greens and mild blues bring about calmness and placidity.
·       Patterns can be used in soft furnishing – Curtains and rugs- or in Wall papers to offset solid colours of the walls and furniture.

·      Creating a theme through a pattern of shapes can be interesting. It can echo in the laminates of furniture, shape of shelving or as part of the false ceiling.

Wall, Floor and Ceiling Treatment
·       Patterns in colour, Wall paper, appropriate 3d decorative board panels, Decal stickers are some finishes that can be added to enhance walls.
·       Pin up boards to put up photographs, posters and certificates, Laminated Writing boards or lacquered glass ones, embellish as well as serve a functional purpose.
·       Shelving fixed in a specific pattern can be a point of focus in the room, while also being utilitarian.

·       Natural stones, Vitrified tiles and Wooden flooring are some flooring options.
·       Ceilings can be painted in hues other than white to create a point of focus or interest. Deeper shade of wall colour on the ceiling can help reduce the volume in a large room.
·       False ceiling in gypsum, Plywood clad with laminates, veneer or any decorative surface material, as is apt, can be good detail to the theme of the room.

Decor Elements
·       The child’s pictures, trophies, certificates, art work are by itself decor elements that personalise the room.
·       A couple of potted plants add freshness and vibrancy to the space.

·      Rugs and carpets in the right pattern and colour will enhance the room and can double as added seating spaces.
·       Bean bags or an interesting seat can be a desirable accessory, which is both functional and aesthetic.
·       Lighting fixtures can also act as a decor accessory.

Lighting
·       General lighting for the room is a basic requirement.
·       Task lights for study table and reading corner is essential. Ideally these two units, if designed near a window can make utmost use of daylight.
·       Adding focus lights in display shelves and in the false ceiling perks up the room.
